How to Style a Kaftan for Plus Size Women

A kaftan styled well is one of the most elegant outfits you can wear — and one of the most forgiving. At plus sizes especially, the kaftan solves problems that other garments create: it does not require precise fitting at the waist or hips, it works in coastal heat, and it moves beautifully on the body. The question is not whether a kaftan works in your size — it does — but how to style it to get the most out of it.

Why the Kaftan Flatters Every Size

The kaftan works across a wide range of bodies because its structure relies on fabric drape rather than fitted seams. Instead of hugging the body, it skims it — following the general contour without clinging to any specific point. The wide opening through the body and the absence of a defined waist means a kaftan in the right fabric and length looks intentional and elegant rather than just large.

At First Resort, kaftans are designed with this in mind: each size in the XS to 8XL range has proportions specific to that size — the sleeve width, neckline depth and hem length are adjusted rather than simply scaled up from a smaller sample.

Getting the Length Right

Length is the most important styling variable for a plus size kaftan. As a general rule, longer is more flattering:

  • Maxi (floor-length or ankle-length): Creates an unbroken vertical line from shoulder to hem. The most elegant and the most widely flattering. Works for beach, resort dinner and travel days.
  • Midi (below the knee): More relaxed, great for daytime and beach settings. The hem hits at a point that flatters most bodies — below the calf but not at the widest part of the leg.
  • Mini kaftan or tunic (above the knee): Best worn over trousers or wide-leg pants rather than alone. As a top it is very versatile; as a standalone it can shorten the leg line.

The exception: if you are petite and plus size, an ankle-length kaftan can overwhelm a shorter frame. A midi-length hitting just below the knee is often more proportionate for petite-plus bodies.

Necklines and Print Scale

Two details that matter more than most people realise:

Neckline: A V-neck or deep scoop neck draws the eye upward, opens the face, and creates the impression of a longer neck. At plus sizes, where the chest and upper body are the visual centre of the garment, a well-designed neckline does a lot of the flattering work. High round necks and boat necks can visually broaden the shoulders and shorten the neck.

Print scale: Counterintuitively, larger prints work better on larger bodies than small, busy prints. A large-scale tropical floral or bold geometric in strong colours looks intentional and confident. A small allover print reads as visually busy on a larger surface area and can make a garment look smaller and cheaper. When in doubt, go bolder.

How to Belt or Tie a Kaftan

Kaftans are designed to flow freely, but adding a belt or tie can define the silhouette if that is the look you want:

  • Wide fabric tie: Many kaftans have built-in fabric ties at the waist. Tying these loosely — not cinching tight — creates soft waist definition without a tourniquet effect. Let the fabric drape naturally below the tie.
  • Wide leather or woven belt: Worn on top of a loose kaftan, a wide belt at the natural waist pulls the silhouette together without restricting. Works best with kaftans in stiffer fabrics — viscose and rayon can bunch oddly under a rigid belt.
  • No belt: Also completely correct. An unbelted kaftan in a good print is a finished outfit. Belting is an option, not a requirement.

Kaftans for Different Occasions

The kaftan is more versatile than it looks:

  • Beach and pool: Slip over a swimsuit, add flat sandals. A maxi kaftan is appropriate even at formal beach clubs.
  • Resort dinner: A kaftan in a rich print or jewel tone, with block-heel sandals and simple earrings, is entirely appropriate at an upscale resort restaurant. No adjustments needed from beach to dinner.
  • Travel day: A cotton voile or viscose kaftan is one of the most comfortable garments to travel in — loose enough to sit in for hours, cool in airport air conditioning, and compresses to almost nothing in a bag.
  • City casual: A midi kaftan over wide-leg trousers works as a city casual outfit. Add a structured bag and it reads as intentional dressing, not beachwear.
