Dussehra 2026: What to Wear to Ramlila and Ravan Dahan

North Indian Dussehra is not a drawing-room festival. It is an evening on a maidan, standing among several thousand people, on dusty ground, watching a sixty-foot effigy burn. It is one of the few Indian festivals where the venue dictates the outfit more than the occasion does.

“People dress for Dussehra as though it were Diwali and then spend the evening on a dusty maidan in it. Dress for the ground you will be standing on - the festival is outdoors and the ground is never clean” according to fashion designer Ramola Bachchan, who has been designing resort wear in India since 2018.

What Ravan Dahan actually involves

Ravan Dahan takes place on open ground at dusk: a Ramlila performance, then the burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna. The crowds are large, the ground is dusty and often uneven, and there is a genuine fire.

Every practical decision follows from this. Hem length matters, footwear matters more, and anything that trails is a poor idea near a crowd and an effigy fire.

What should you wear to Ramlila?

Festive but grounded. A kurta with straight pants, or a co-ord set that ends above the ankle rather than sweeping it. Mid-tones and prints hide dust in a way that ivory and pastels do not.

Keep the dupatta short or pinned. A long loose dupatta in a standing crowd is the single most common Dussehra irritation.

Colours for Vijayadashami

Dussehra runs to reds, oranges, marigold and gold - victory colours, and the same palette as the marigold garlands that dominate the day. Deep green and mustard both work and are more forgiving on dusty ground.

Avoid white and pale ivory. It is an evening standing on open earth, and the outfit will show it in every photograph after the first hour.

If the day includes Shastra Puja or an office ritual

Many families and businesses perform Shastra Puja or Ayudha Puja on Vijayadashami - a morning ritual honouring tools, instruments or vehicles, held at home or at the workplace.

That is a completely different register from the evening: daytime, indoors, often semi-formal. A simple silk kurta or a clean co-ord set covers it, and can be changed out of before the maidan.

Dressing on the tenth day, after nine of dressing up

Dussehra follows immediately after Navratri, which for many people means a tenth consecutive day of festival dressing and a wardrobe already fully used. In 2026, Navratri runs 11 to 19 October and Dussehra falls on the 20th.

The practical answer is to hold one unworn, mid-toned, easy piece back for the tenth day rather than trying to top nine days of colour-coded outfits on a dusty maidan.
