Eid dressing carries a constraint most Indian festival dressing does not: the outfit has to work for prayer, for a full day of visiting, and for an evening gathering, while staying modest throughout. That is a demanding brief, and it is why the kaftan has been the answer in Muslim wardrobes for several centuries.

The visiting round
The afternoon is the longest part of Eid and the most photographed: several houses, a great deal of food, and constant sitting and standing. Whatever is chosen has to hold its shape across six or seven hours.

The evening dawat
The evening is the dressiest part of Eid and the point at which embellishment is expected rather than optional. Silk, velvet in the north, and real embroidery across the yoke and cuffs.
Because the dawat follows a long day, most people change once, in the evening. Plan for two outfits rather than one that compromises between prayer and dinner.
Which colours are traditional for Eid?
There is no prescribed Eid colour in the way Navratri or Basant Panchami prescribe one, which makes the palette wide. In practice pastels and jewel tones dominate: pistachio, powder blue, blush, ivory, and deeper emerald and burgundy for the evening.
White and ivory carry a particular association with Eid and photograph beautifully in daylight, though they are a demanding choice for a day built around eating.
