Festive Colours by Rashi: A Colour Guide for the Twelve Signs
Colour by rashi is one of the most-searched and least-usefully-answered questions in Indian dressing. The associations themselves are consistent - they come from the ruling planet of each sign - but almost nothing written about them says how to actually wear the colour, or what to do when your sign’s colour does not suit you.

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius - the fire signs
Aries (Mesha) is ruled by Mars and takes red, coral and scarlet. Leo (Simha) is ruled by the Sun and takes gold, saffron and deep orange. Sagittarius (Dhanu) is ruled by Jupiter and takes yellow and mustard.
All three are warm and high-saturation, which suits festival dressing. They also all photograph strongly in candlelight, which makes them well matched to Diwali and Navratri evenings.
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn - the earth signs
Taurus (Vrishabha) is ruled by Venus and takes white, cream and pastel pink. Virgo (Kanya) is ruled by Mercury and takes green and olive. Capricorn (Makara) is ruled by Saturn and takes deep blue, grey and black.
These are the subtler end of the range and the easiest to wear outside a festival. Capricorn’s palette in particular carries straight into evening wear, and a deep blue co-ord set works far beyond any single occasion.
Gemini, Libra and Aquarius - the air signs
Gemini (Mithuna) is ruled by Mercury and takes green, particularly lighter and fresher greens. Libra (Tula) is ruled by Venus and takes white, pastel blue and soft pink. Aquarius (Kumbha) is ruled by Saturn and takes deep blue, indigo and grey.
The air signs are the most flattering group across skin tones, because the range sits in the middle of the value scale rather than at the extremes.
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces - the water signs
Cancer (Karka) is ruled by the Moon and takes white, silver and pale blue. Scorpio (Vrishchika) is ruled by Mars and takes red and maroon. Pisces (Meena) is ruled by Jupiter and takes yellow and sea green.
Cancer’s silver-white and Pisces’ sea green are the two most distinctive shades in the whole system, and the hardest to find - sea green in particular is worth seeking out because so few people wear it.
What if your rashi colour does not suit you?
This is the practical question nobody answers. Roughly a third of people have a rashi colour that is genuinely unflattering against their skin - most often flat white on deeper tones, or primary yellow on cooler ones.
Wear it as an accent. A dupatta, a border, a blouse, or jewellery in the shade satisfies the intent entirely. The tradition is about carrying the colour, not about being covered in it.
How fabric changes a rashi colour
The same shade behaves completely differently across fabrics, which is why a colour that looked wrong in one garment can be right in another. Red in matte cotton is flat; red in silk or velvet has depth.
If a rashi colour has never suited you, try it in a different fabric weight before abandoning it. Deep tones in particular need a fabric with some lustre to avoid reading as heavy.
