Indian Women's Size Chart Explained: XS to 8XL, Measurements & How to Measure

A size chart only helps if you know how to read it — and most Indian women shopping online have never been shown how. Letter sizes mean different things at different brands, international conversions are inconsistent, and "L" at one label can be "XL" at another. This guide lays out a complete Indian women's size chart from XS to 8XL with bust, waist and hip measurements in centimetres and inches, explains how UK, US and EU sizing maps onto it, and walks you through measuring yourself correctly with a tape — so the next time you order a kaftan or a fitted dress, you order once and it fits.

Quick answer

An Indian women's size chart maps bust, waist and hip measurements in centimetres to letter sizes — XS (bust 81 cm) through 8XL (137 cm), each size stepping up roughly 5 cm. Measure over light clothing with a soft tape, match your largest measurement, and size up between sizes.

Why does fit matter so much? Size and fit drive over half of all fashion returns in India — the full data is in our research report: E-Commerce Returns and RTO in Indian Fashion 2026.

The complete size chart: XS to 8XL

The table below is First Resort's body-measurements chart, which covers twelve sizes — one of the widest ranges available in Indian womenswear. Every measurement is of your body, not the garment. Garments are cut with ease (breathing room) added on top of these numbers, which is why you match the chart to your body rather than to a garment you own.

Size UK US EU Bust (cm / in) Waist (cm / in) Hips (cm / in)
XS 6 2 34 81 / 32" 61 / 24" 86 / 34"
S 8 4 36 86 / 34" 66 / 26" 91 / 36"
M 10 6 38 91 / 36" 71 / 28" 96 / 38"
L 12 8 40 96 / 38" 76 / 30" 102 / 40"
XL 14 10 42 102 / 40" 81 / 32" 107 / 42"
2XL 16 12 44 107 / 42" 86 / 34" 112 / 44"
3XL 18 14 46 112 / 44" 91 / 36" 117 / 46"
4XL 20 16 48 117 / 46" 96 / 38" 122 / 48"
5XL 22 18 50 122 / 48" 102 / 40" 127 / 50"
6XL 24 20 52 127 / 50" 107 / 42" 132 / 52"
7XL 26 22 54 132 / 52" 117 / 46" 142 / 56"
8XL 28 24 56 137 / 54" 122 / 48" 147 / 58"

Notice the pattern: from XS through 6XL, each size steps up by roughly 5 cm (2 inches) at the bust, waist and hips. The steps widen slightly at 7XL and 8XL to follow how bodies actually change at those sizes. If you are shopping specifically at the upper end of this range, our guide to 6XL to 8XL clothing for women in India covers where to shop and what to look for in far more depth.

How do you measure yourself correctly?

You need a soft measuring tape (the tailor's kind, not a metal one), a mirror, and two minutes. Measure over light, fitted clothing or underwear — never over a thick kurta or jeans. Stand naturally: no pulling in, no pushing out. The tape should sit snug against the body but never compress it — you should be able to slide one finger underneath.

Bust: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level all the way around — it tends to droop at the back, so check in the mirror or ask someone to help. Keep your arms down after positioning the tape; raised arms lift the chest and shrink the reading.

Waist: Measure at your natural waist — the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the navel. If you're not sure where it is, bend gently to one side; the crease that forms is your natural waist. Breathe out normally before reading the number.

Hips: Stand with your feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat — usually 18–23 cm below the natural waist. This is the measurement most often taken too high; the fullest point is what matters, not the hip bone.

Write all three numbers down in centimetres. When they land in different sizes — a very common situation — the garment type decides which one governs, which brings us to fit.

UK, US and EU sizes: how the conversion works

International conversions confuse people because the three systems count differently. The reliable rules of thumb: a UK size is the US size plus 4 (UK 12 = US 8), and an EU size is the UK size plus 28 (UK 12 = EU 40). Indian letter sizing generally tracks the UK system, so an Indian L corresponds to UK 12, US 8, EU 40.

Two cautions. First, conversions are a guide, not a guarantee — a US 8 at one brand can measure differently from a US 8 at another, because there is no enforced standard anywhere in womenswear. Second, "vanity sizing" means many Western high-street labels cut generously against their own stated charts. The only conversion that never lies is centimetres: match your tape measurements to the brand's chart and ignore the letter or number on the label. That is exactly why a good size chart leads with body measurements and treats UK/US/EU columns as reference.

Why a kaftan and a fitted dress use the chart differently

The same chart serves every garment, but silhouettes read it differently. A kaftan or a tunic is loose-fitting by design, cut with generous ease well beyond the body measurements — so the fit points that matter are the shoulder and the overall proportion, and being between sizes is rarely a problem. A fitted dress, a structured co-ord set or tailored pants follow the body more closely, so your largest measurement governs: if your bust is an L but your hips are an XL, order the XL for anything fitted through the hip.

This is also why the classic advice holds: when in doubt, size up. A slightly roomy garment drapes well and can be taken in; a tight one has nowhere to go. Flowing silhouettes — kaftans, A-line dresses, relaxed kurtas — are also simply more forgiving across a wider band of measurements, which is one reason they anchor so much of Indian resort wear. For a fuller discussion of matching silhouettes to proportions, see our guide to resort wear for every body type and, for the fuller end of the range, how to style a kaftan for plus-size women.

The made-to-order advantage

Most fashion brands cut inventory in bulk, which is why size ranges stop at XL or 2XL — larger sizes are treated as a stocking risk. Made-to-order production works the other way around: each garment is cut after you order it, so a 7XL costs the brand no more shelf risk than an M. This is how First Resort offers all twelve sizes, XS to 8XL — plus custom sizing — on every style at one price across every size — the design decides the silhouette, and the chart scales it to your body. It also means the chart above is not a subset of what's "in stock": every size on it is always available on every piece, from shirts to full-length kaftans.

“We built the range to 8XL because elegance was never a size — the moment a woman stops compromising on fit, her real style appears,” says Ramola Bachchan, founder of First Resort.

Practical upshot for you: measure once, keep your three numbers saved on your phone, and re-measure every six months or after any noticeable change — bodies shift, and the tape is faster than a return.

Size chart FAQs

What size is XL in India for women? In Indian womenswear that follows UK-aligned sizing, XL corresponds to a bust of about 102 cm (40"), waist 81 cm (32") and hips 107 cm (42") — roughly UK 14, US 10, EU 42. Always confirm against the specific brand's chart, as letter sizes are not standardised.

How do I convert a UK size to a US or EU size? Subtract 4 from the UK size to get the US size, and add 28 to the UK size to get the EU size. So UK 16 = US 12 = EU 44. Treat conversions as a guide and centimetre measurements as the truth.

Should I measure over clothes? Measure over underwear or a single light, fitted layer. Thick clothing adds 2–5 cm to a reading, which is enough to push you a full size out.

What if my bust and hips are in different sizes? For fitted garments, order the size that fits your largest measurement. For loose silhouettes like kaftans and tunics, the difference usually doesn't matter — the cut has enough ease to accommodate both.

Is a size chart based on body or garment measurements? A proper size chart lists body measurements; the garment is cut larger than those numbers to allow ease. If a chart lists garment measurements instead, it should say so — and you'd then compare it against a garment you own, not your body.

What is the largest women's size available in India? Most Indian brands stop at XL–3XL. First Resort's made-to-order range runs to 8XL — bust 137 cm (54"), waist 122 cm (48"), hips 147 cm (58") — on every style, at the same price as every other size.
