Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal: What to Wear in January
India marks the same solar turn three different ways within forty-eight hours, and the outfits could not be less alike. A Lohri bonfire, a Sankranti rooftop in Ahmedabad and a Pongal morning in Chennai are three genuinely different dressing problems, unified only by the date.
Quick answer
Lohri falls on Thursday 14 January 2027; Makar Sankranti and Pongal both fall on Friday 15 January. Three harvest festivals across three regions on consecutive days - a Punjabi bonfire, a Gujarati rooftop, and a Tamil household - each with its own dress logic.
Sankranti timing depends on the exact solar transit and the punya kaal window varies by city; check a panchang for your own city.
“These are the coldest festivals in the Indian calendar in the north and among the warmest in the south, on the same weekend. Dress for your latitude, not for the photographs you have seen” says Ramola Bachchan, the fashion designer behind First Resort.
Lohri - dressing for a bonfire
Lohri is an outdoor night around a fire in Punjab and Delhi in mid-January, which is to say it is genuinely cold - often close to freezing after dark - and there is an open flame at the centre of it.
Bright, warm and layered. A kurta with a heavy shawl, or a cashmere layer that is part of the outfit rather than carried. Keep sleeves narrow: people stand close to the fire to throw in rewri and popcorn.
Makar Sankranti - dressing for a rooftop
In Gujarat and Maharashtra, Sankranti is Uttarayan: an entire day on a rooftop flying kites, in full sun, from morning to dusk. The wardrobe problem is sun exposure and arm movement, not cold.
Long sleeves in a light fabric beat short sleeves - you are reaching upward for eight hours. Traditional black is worn in Maharashtra for Sankranti, and a cotton kurta with pants is the practical answer everywhere.
Pongal - dressing for the harvest
Pongal in Tamil Nadu is a four-day festival built around cooking the first rice of the harvest, largely at home and outdoors in the morning. It is warm, it is domestic, and it involves a great deal of standing near a stove.
Traditional Pongal dressing runs to cotton and silk in cream, gold and turmeric yellow. A cream or ivory piece with a gold border is the classic register, and it is one of the few festivals where the same palette reads correctly across all four days.
Why do three festivals on one weekend dress so differently?
Because they are marking the same astronomical event from very different climates and agricultural traditions. Lohri is a Punjabi winter bonfire; Uttarayan is a Gujarati kite festival in full sun; Pongal is a Tamil harvest thanksgiving. Only the date is shared.
The practical consequence is that a Lohri outfit is unwearable at Pongal and the reverse, and anyone travelling between family celebrations that weekend should pack for two climates.
The colours of the January festivals
Lohri runs to bright reds, oranges and pinks, which read well against firelight. Sankranti in Maharashtra traditionally uses black, unusually for a Hindu festival, because it absorbs winter warmth. Pongal runs to cream, gold and turmeric.
The one shared thread is warmth of tone: this is a sun festival, and every regional palette leans into it.
