Rayon Care Guide — How to Wash and Maintain Rayon Clothes
Rayon is one of the most common fabrics in modern Indian designer wear — fluid, drapey, breathable, and a strong stand-in for silk at a fraction of the cost. But rayon is also the most temperamental fabric in your wardrobe when it comes to washing. Hot water shrinks it dramatically, machine agitation distorts the weave, and even ironing too hot leaves shiny patches. This guide explains exactly how to handle rayon — and the rayon-blend pieces like viscose, modal, and rayon crepe — so they keep their drape and colour through years of wear.

What is rayon, and why is it tricky?
Rayon is a semi-synthetic fibre made from regenerated cellulose — usually wood pulp dissolved and spun into yarn. It feels closer to silk than cotton and drapes beautifully on the body, which is why it shows up in Indian designer kaftans, dresses, and tunics. The catch: rayon is up to 30% weaker when wet than dry, and the fibres swell and shrink unpredictably with temperature changes. The result — a beautifully made rayon dress can lose two inches in length on a single hot wash.
How to wash rayon
Hand wash rayon pieces in cold water with a mild liquid detergent. Submerge gently, swish lightly, and let soak for no more than five minutes — extended soaking weakens the wet fibres further. Rinse in clean cold water and press out water gently between two clean towels. Never wring, twist, or scrub. For rayon labelled "machine washable," the gentle cycle in cold water with the garment in a mesh bag works, but hand washing is always safer for the drape.
For embellished rayon — beaded, sequined, or heavily embroidered — dry cleaning is the safest choice. The water absorption that loosens hand-stitched embellishments is amplified in rayon.
How to dry and iron rayon
Lay rayon flat on a clean towel to dry. Hanging wet rayon stretches it dramatically — a kaftan can gain six inches in the body before fully drying. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades dyed rayon faster than cotton. Tumble drying is a hard no — even on low, the heat plus tumbling shrinks rayon and distorts the weave permanently.
Iron rayon on the lowest heat setting (under 110°C) from the reverse side, with the fabric still slightly damp. High heat creates shiny patches that cannot be removed. A pressing cloth between the iron and rayon adds protection. For lightly creased rayon, a handheld steamer works without any direct contact.
How to store rayon
Hang rayon dresses, kaftans, and tunics on padded hangers in a breathable cotton garment bag. Folded storage works for rayon co-ord sets and tops, with acid-free tissue paper between folds to prevent crease lines. Avoid plastic during monsoon — rayon picks up musty smells faster than cotton because of the cellulose base. Add silica gel packets in storage areas with high humidity. Cedar blocks help with moths in long-term storage.
Common rayon mistakes to avoid
The biggest rayon mistakes: hot water washing (significant shrinkage, sometimes 8-10%), tumble drying (irreversible distortion), wringing wet (permanent stretching and creasing), high-heat ironing (shiny patches, scorch marks), and overlooking the wet weakness when scrubbing stains. If you remember nothing else: cold water, no wringing, low heat. Rayon rewards gentle handling more than any other fabric.
