What to Wear in Doha: Qatar Dress Code and Packing Guide

Doha is an easier city to dress for than its reputation suggests, provided you understand one thing: the modesty expectation is real and mild, and the heat is neither. Between May and September the temperature sits above 40°C with high humidity, which is a different and more punishing problem than the dry heat further west in the Gulf.

Qatar's tourism board sets out the expectation plainly in its visitor guidance: dress modestly in public, with shoulders covered and clothing below the knee.

What is the dress code in Doha?

Shoulders covered, knees covered, in malls, souqs, museums, government buildings and public streets. That is the whole rule for visitors. No headscarf is required outside a mosque, and there is no expectation that visitors wear local dress.

Sheer fabric over a covered outfit is fine. Sleeveless under a jacket or a light shrug is fine. What reads as inappropriate is bare shoulders and short hems in public spaces, and swimwear anywhere other than a pool or a private beach.

Humidity changes what fabric works

This is where Doha differs from Abu Dhabi or Riyadh. The Gulf coast is humid, and humidity makes synthetic fabric intolerable in a way that dry heat does not. Anything that does not breathe will stick within minutes of stepping outside.

Cotton, linen and modal are the fabrics that work. Loose cuts matter more than light colours — air moving against skin is what cools you, and a fitted pale dress is less comfortable than a loose dark one.

“Humidity is the thing people underestimate about Doha. A loose caftan in cotton will be comfortable at forty degrees; a fitted dress in anything synthetic will not, whatever colour it is.” says Ramola Bachchan, the fashion designer behind First Resort.

What to wear where

Souq Waqif — the most atmospheric part of the city and the one where dressing correctly matters most. Covered shoulders, below-knee, flat shoes for uneven stone. A long kaftan is close to perfect here.

Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum — modest and comfortable, plus a layer. Both are strongly air-conditioned.

The Corniche — long walks, no shade, full sun. Long and loose, a hat, and something with sleeves. Early morning or after sunset is the only sensible timing from May to September.

Hotel restaurants and Katara — Doha dresses well in the evening. Smart and covered: a midi dress with sleeves, an embellished caftan, or a co-ord set with good jewellery.

Resorts and pools — swimwear is fine within the resort. Cover up to cross a lobby.

Does Doha have a stricter dress code than Dubai?

Slightly, in practice rather than in law. Qatar is more conservative in daily life than the UAE, and there are more people in traditional dress around you, which changes what feels appropriate even when nothing is enforced. The practical difference is small: what passes in a Dubai mall passes in a Doha mall.

Where it does matter is Ramadan, when daytime modesty is expected of everyone and eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight is not acceptable.

A week in Doha, packed

Two long kaftans, one plain and one printed. A midi dress with sleeves for evenings. A linen co-ord. Loose trousers with a lightweight top. A scarf for aircon and for any mosque visit. Flat sandals for the souq, one smarter pair for dinner.

Everything loose, everything natural, nothing that needs ironing after a suitcase. If you buy one thing for the trip, make it a full-length caftan — it covers correctly, moves air, and is the only garment on this list that works for the souq at noon and a hotel dinner at nine.
