What to Wear in Gokarna: Beaches, Treks and the Temple Dress Code
What to wear in Gokarna in 2026 comes down to one fact that sets this small Karnataka town apart from Goa: it is a working temple town first and a beach town second. You will spend mornings on a cliff trail between coves and evenings on a street where pilgrims queue for one of South India's most revered Shiva temples. This guide covers the weather season by season, what to wear on the beaches and the famous beach trek, the strict temple dress code, and a packing list built around breathable kaftans, cotton and long skirts or pants.
Quick answer
Pack light cotton and linen for warm, humid days, a swimsuit and cover-up for the beaches, and grippy shoes for the cliff trek. For the Mahabaleshwar Temple, women need a saree or salwar suit and men a dhoti; jeans and shorts are not allowed.
What is the weather like in Gokarna?
Gokarna sits in the Uttara Kannada district on Karnataka's Arabian Sea coast, about 145 km south of Goa by road, and Karnataka Tourism divides its year into three seasons (Karnataka Tourism):
- October to February, peak season. Temperatures between 20°C and 30°C, clear skies and a sea calm enough for swimming, water sports and beach trekking. This is when most visitors come, and the wardrobe is simple: linen, cotton and swimwear.
- March to May, summer. Temperatures can climb to 35–38°C with high humidity, which makes afternoons uncomfortable; mornings and evenings stay pleasant for temple visits and beach walks, and the sea grows rougher toward May. Dress for sweat: the loosest, lightest viscose and cotton you own.
- June to September, monsoon. Heavy south-west monsoon rain turns the hills green, but the beaches close for swimming and water sports because of rough seas, and the treks become slippery. Pack quick-drying pieces and shoes with grip.
There is no cool season to speak of, so you do not need a jacket. A light scarf or stole is still worth packing: it covers shoulders in town and at the temple, and doubles as a wrap on an air-conditioned overnight bus or train.
How is dressing for Gokarna different from Goa?
Karnataka Tourism describes Gokarna as holding on to a slower pace of life than its glitzier northern neighbour (Karnataka Tourism). In practice that changes three things about your suitcase. First, there are fewer beach clubs and almost no dress-up nightlife, so one or two easy evening pieces are enough. Second, the town centre is a pilgrimage street, so you want more coverage there than you would in North Goa. Third, the best beaches are reached on foot over headlands, so your shoes and daypack matter more than your evening wear.
If you are combining both on one trip, pack for Goa and then swap a party dress for a long cotton dress or kurta that works at the temple. Our Goa guide covers the northern half of the coast.
Beaches and the Gokarna beach trek
Gokarna's five best-known beaches are Gokarna Main, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise (Karnataka Tourism). Kudle, the largest, is a palm-fringed crescent lined with cafes and guesthouses about ten minutes' walk from town; Om Beach, about 6 km from town, is shaped like the sacred Om symbol and is the busiest for water sports. Half Moon Beach is reached only by a cliffside trek from Om Beach or by boat, and Paradise, the most remote, lies beyond it.
The coastal walk linking Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise is described by the state tourism board as a 2–4 hour hike over rocky headlands and through cashew groves (Karnataka Tourism). Dress for it the way you would for a warm day hike, not a beach day:
- A swimsuit worn underneath, so you can swim at each cove.
- Loose shorts or light pants and a breathable shirt with sleeves you can roll down against the midday sun.
- A short cover-up or sarong that packs flat into a daypack and becomes a towel, a skirt or shade.
- Closed sandals or trail shoes with grip; flip-flops are miserable on the rocks.
- A wide-brimmed hat and plenty of water.
Om Beach and Kudle are relaxed about swimwear on the sand, but cover up when you walk into a cafe or back into town. A knee-length kaftan is the quickest way to do it.
"Gokarna is the one beach town where I tell people to pack a long skirt before a second swimsuit. You will walk from the sand to the temple street in the same afternoon, and a long cotton layer makes that easy," says Ramola Bachchan, the fashion designer behind First Resort.
The Mahabaleshwar Temple dress code
The Mahabaleshwar Temple, home to the Shiva Atmalinga, is why Gokarna is called the "Kashi of the South", and its dress code is enforced. According to Karnataka Tourism, men must wear a dhoti or pancha and go bare-chested, women must wear a saree or a salwar suit (churidar), and jeans and shorts are prohibited; non-Hindus are restricted from the inner sanctum (Karnataka Tourism). When the temple administration began enforcing the rule in 2018, it said shirts, trousers, hats, caps and coats were not allowed (Outlook India).
What that means for a traveller's suitcase:
- Women: pack one salwar suit, or a long kurta with matching pants and a dupatta or stole. A saree works too if you wear one. A resort maxi dress is not on the permitted list, so do not rely on it for the temple itself.
- Men: a dhoti or mundu is required, and shirts come off before entry.
- Everyone: shoes are left outside, so wear sandals you can slip off, and keep a light scarf in your bag for the town's other shrines and for the Car Street crowds around festivals.

Town, cafes and evenings
Gokarna's evenings are low-key: a sunset at Kudle or Om, dinner at a beach cafe, perhaps a walk back along Car Street. A printed co-ord set or an easy midi dress covers every restaurant in town. On the beach cafes, a long kaftan over a swimsuit is fine; on the temple street, add a scarf over bare shoulders.
Many visitors come for yoga, and Karnataka Tourism notes that multi-day retreats, several set on clifftops above the sea, are popular with long-stay travellers (Karnataka Tourism). For those, pack soft cotton pants or shorts and a loose tunic you can move in, rather than technical activewear that traps heat.
Festivals and day trips
Time your visit around the temple calendar and the crowds change completely. Maha Shivaratri, which falls in February or March, draws the year's largest pilgrimage crowds, with a chariot procession that starts at the Maha Ganapati Temple and passes along Car Street (Karnataka Tourism). If you are in town then, dress as you would for the temple all day: a long kurta or salwar suit, a stole and sandals you can slip off quickly. Keep valuables in a cross-body bag rather than a beach tote.
The most popular inland excursion is Yana, about 52 km east of Gokarna in the Western Ghats, where two towering black limestone rock formations rise out of the forest (Karnataka Tourism). A forest walk leads to them, so swap the beach kaftan for light pants, a long-sleeved shirt and closed shoes, and carry a layer if you go during the monsoon, when the forest paths are at their greenest and wettest.
Colour and fabric
With daytime temperatures of 20–30°C even in the best months and humidity that climbs into summer, fabric matters more than style. Choose cotton, linen and viscose; leave synthetics, denim and anything lined at home. Colour is a free choice on the beaches, but saffron, white and cream fit the temple street naturally, and a deep print hides the dust of the cliff trails better than white.

Adding Hampi to the trip?
Many travellers pair Gokarna with Hampi, the ruined Vijayanagara capital inland. The two need different wardrobes: Hampi is dry, rocky and hot, with long days of walking among temples and boulders, so trade the swimwear for sun-covering linen, a hat and sturdy shoes. Our Hampi guide has the details.
