What to Wear in Miami: South Beach, Pool Clubs and Nights Out

What to wear in Miami comes down to two things: a city that is hot and sticky for much of the year, and a social life that takes getting dressed seriously. This 2026 guide covers Miami's two seasons, what to wear on South Beach, at pool clubs and around the Art Deco streets, how to dress for dinner and a night out, and a short packing list built around breathable kaftans and co-ords.

Quick answer

Pack light, breathable pieces in linen, cotton and viscose for the day, one or two polished outfits for dinner and nightlife, and a light layer for air-conditioned interiors. From late May to mid-October expect heat, humidity and near-daily showers; the winter months are drier and less humid.

What is the weather like in Miami?

South Florida really has two seasons rather than four. The National Weather Service office in Miami divides the year into a summer (wet) season and a winter (dry) season. Its study of Miami records puts the median start of the summer season on 21 May and its median end on 17 October. In those months daily highs average in the upper 80s F (around 31 C), lows rarely drop below 70 F (21 C), dew points sit in the low to mid 70s, and showers or thunderstorms are almost a daily occurrence (NWS Miami). The winter season, which takes in autumn and spring, brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity and less frequent rain.

Summer also overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from 1 June to 30 November each year (National Weather Service). That rarely changes what you wear, but it does mean travel insurance and a flexible plan matter more from August to October.

Packing for the wet season versus the dry season

Late May to mid-October. Think humidity first. Loose shapes that let air move, and fabrics that dry fast after a shower or a sweaty walk: linen, cotton voile and viscose. Skip anything that clings or shows sweat, such as tight synthetic knits or heavy denim. A packable umbrella beats a raincoat, which will only feel like a sauna. Sandals that can survive a puddle are more useful than delicate leather.

November to April. With less humidity, the wardrobe can be a little more polished. Days are still warm enough for the beach, but evenings can feel fresh by the water, so add a light jacket, a long-sleeve shirt or a wrap. Silk and crepe come back into play for dinners when the air is less heavy.

South Beach, pool clubs and daytime

Miami Beach is a place where people dress for the beach and then keep going. A swimsuit with a sheer cover-up or a short caftan (the same garment as a kaftan, spelled the other way) works for the sand, a beach bar and the walk back to the hotel. For pool clubs and hotel day beds, the look is a notch dressier: a printed swimsuit under a silk or georgette kaftan, gold sandals, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

It is good manners to cover up when you leave the sand, so keep a cover-up in your bag rather than walking into a café in a wet swimsuit. A hat and a long-sleeve layer for boat days are worth packing in any month.

Art Deco streets, Wynwood and the design district

The pastel hotels of Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue are made for photographs, and a bold print or a single strong colour works well against them. A floral print midi dress or a bright co-ord set is ideal for a morning walking tour. For the murals and galleries of Wynwood or an afternoon in the Design District, swap to wide pants with a loose top and comfortable flat sandals, because you will be on your feet and in and out of air-conditioned shops.

That air conditioning is the part visitors forget. Restaurants, museums, malls and cinemas can feel cold after the heat outside, so keep a light shirt or scarf in your bag even in August.

“In Miami, dress for the evening first and let the day take care of itself. A silk kaftan with a heel does more work there than any little black dress,” says Ramola Bachchan, the fashion designer behind First Resort.

Restaurants, rooftop bars and nightlife

Miami evenings are dressier than most beach destinations. Dress codes are set by each venue rather than by any rule, so check the restaurant or club's own website before you go, especially for upscale dining rooms and nightclubs, which are more likely to have one. As general advice, avoid beachwear, flip-flops and athletic clothes after dark in smart venues.

For dinner, a long kaftan in silk or a satin-finish fabric with block heels is effortless and cool enough for a humid terrace. A matching co-ord of wide trousers and a cropped top reads polished at a rooftop bar. For a club night, look to the party wear and evening wear edits: short, shimmering or embellished pieces, with shoes you can actually dance in. Choose light fabrics even at night in summer; the humidity does not break after sunset.

What should you not wear in Miami?

A few things work against you here. Heavy fabrics and dark, tight clothing trap heat in the wet season. Brand-new shoes will blister on long walks in the humidity. And a wardrobe that is only swimwear leaves you stuck, because the city's restaurants and bars expect something more finished in the evening. Aim for a mix of beach pieces and two or three outfits you would wear to a good restaurant at home.

A 5-day Miami packing list

  1. Two swimsuits and a cover-up or short kaftan for beach and pool.
  2. One long silk or georgette kaftan that works for a pool club and for dinner.
  3. Two breathable day dresses in linen or cotton, one printed.
  4. One co-ord set that can be worn together or split into separates.
  5. Wide-leg pants and a couple of loose tops for city days.
  6. One going-out outfit from the party wear edit.
  7. A light jacket or long shirt for air conditioning and winter evenings.
  8. Flat sandals, one pair of heels or block heels, a hat, sunglasses and a packable umbrella.

Everything on that list should be light enough to wash in a hotel sink and dry overnight. For a longer stay, our week-long capsule wardrobe shows how to stretch it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Miami for weather?

The winter season, roughly November to April, is drier and less humid, which makes it the most comfortable time to visit. Late May to mid-October is hot, humid and showery, and overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season.

Is there a dress code for restaurants in Miami?

There is no citywide rule; each restaurant, rooftop bar and club sets its own. Upscale venues and nightclubs are the most likely to have one, so check their website and avoid beachwear and flip-flops in the evening.

What should I wear to a Miami pool club?

A swimsuit under a silk or georgette kaftan, sandals, sunglasses and a hat. Pool clubs lean dressier than a public beach, so a polished cover-up is worth packing.

Do I need a jacket in Miami?

Rarely for the cold outdoors, but a light jacket or long shirt is useful for air-conditioned restaurants and shops, and for breezy evenings by the water in winter.
