Beach weddings in India have their own dress code — somewhere between the formality of a traditional Indian wedding and the ease of a holiday. The venue is sand, the backdrop is sea, and the climate is almost always hot. What works in a ballroom does not work here. Heavy lehengas sink into sand, stilettos are impossible, and anything that cannot handle humidity and wind will betray you by the second ceremony. Here is what actually works, function by function.

The mehndi and haldi

These are the most relaxed functions — typically held poolside or on the beach itself during the day. Colour is expected, comfort is essential, and you will probably get turmeric on something.

• Bright printed co-ord sets — festive, comfortable, and the two-piece format means you can replace just the top if haldi stains land
• Kaftan tops paired with palazzos or cigarette pants — more relaxed than a dress, easier to move in
• Cotton or cotton-blend fabrics — these functions are daytime, outdoor, and long; you need breathability

The reception or farewell brunch

Beach weddings often close with a morning-after brunch rather than a formal reception. If there is a reception, it is usually more relaxed than a traditional one — think open-air seating, sea views, and a semi-formal dress code.

• Elegant dresses — midi or maxi length, something that reads polished but not "last night's outfit"
• Printed tunics with tailored pants — fresh, appropriate, and easy to travel in afterwards
