AI Search vs Google Search in Indian Fashion: A Same-Site Comparison

A single Indian women's fashion site published 114 blog articles that have collectively earned 6,751 AI citations from Microsoft Bing's Copilot and partner engines, and 911 Google search clicks in the last 30 days. The two surfaces reward very different content. This is a first-party data analysis joining Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance with Google Search Console for firstresort.in, the women's resort-wear label by Ramola Bachchan — a same-site comparison most publishers can't yet run.

Key findings

  • AI search rewards Indian ceremony content: Haldi, Roka, Reception, Karva Chauth pages earn ~180 citations per page on average but produce ~10 Google clicks per page in 30 days.
  • Google search rewards destination guides: hill-station guides (Darjeeling, Mussoorie, Sikkim) drive most of the click-side volume.
  • Eight pages win both surfaces — they're a specific kind of page (destination + season + India travel).
  • Product and collection pages get cited <1% of the time by AI — editorial guides dominate AI's citation pool by a wide margin.
  • Top AI queries are intent-loaded: "haldi ceremony in india", "south indian look for haldi", "reception guest look". Specific occasions, not generic browsing.

The two datasets

The AI dataset is the cumulative cited-pages export from Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for firstresort.in, snapshotted on 2026-05-26. It covers every URL that Microsoft's Copilot or partner AI surfaces have grounded in over the prior 88-day window. The Google dataset is Search Console's per-page click and impression data for the 30 days ending 2026-05-26 — pulled live via API at the time of this article's publication. The overlap (pages appearing in both) is 106 URLs.

Note on the trend tail: BWT's daily citation counts typically under-report for ~14 days while Microsoft aggregates partner-engine data, so cumulative totals are the safe number to cite here, not week-over-week deltas at the tail.

6,751Cumulative AI citations across 114 pages
911Google clicks in the last 30 days (across same 106 BWT pages)

Per-URL: where each page sits

Each dot is one URL. Horizontal axis is Google clicks in the last 30 days; vertical axis is cumulative AI citations. If both surfaces rewarded the same content, dots would cluster along a diagonal. They don't.

Each dot = one blog article. Pages along the top axis (high citations, near-zero clicks) are AI-heavy. Pages along the right (high clicks, low citations) are Google-heavy. Coloured by content category.

By category: a clean split

Grouping pages by content type makes the divergence visible. Same axes, but aggregated:

Per-category totals for AI citations (cumulative) vs Google clicks (last 30d). Ceremony content towers on the AI side; the homepage and brand pages tower on the Google side. Destination guides do well on both.

AI-heavy pages

These are pages with at least 80 AI citations and 5 or fewer Google clicks in the last 30 days. They get pulled into AI answers but rarely surface for click-driven Google traffic.

Page AI Citations Google Clicks (30d)
a haldi ceremony 493 1

The pattern is consistent: Indian wedding-ceremony outfit guides (Haldi, Roka, Karva Chauth, Reception) and category style guides (Indo-Western, designer kaftan, plus-size 6XL–8XL) dominate. These are queries where someone is researching a specific dress code — exactly the kind of intent where users prefer an AI answer over scrolling through ten blue links. Google still surfaces the same pages, just not with click-yielding placement.

Google-heavy pages

These are pages with at least 8 Google clicks in the last 30 days and 10 or fewer AI citations cumulative. Google sends meaningful traffic; AI ignores them.

This list is dominated by international destination guides (Bhutan, Switzerland, Singapore, Andaman) where AI users seem to prefer general travel-guide sources over fashion-specific content. The brand's About Ramola Bachchan page also lands here — it ranks well for navigational queries on Google but isn't a natural citation target for AI.

Pages that win both surfaces

The "unicorn" set — at least 50 AI citations and at least 15 Google clicks in 30 days. Just eight pages qualify.

Page AI Citations Google Clicks (30d)
homepage 133 240
sikkim gangtok 182 79

mussoorie 199 39
coorg 104 31
kashmir srinagar 219 23

Seven of the eight are Indian hill-station destination guides — Manali, Sikkim/Gangtok, Darjeeling, Mussoorie, Coorg, Kashmir, plus a baby-shower outfit guide. The pattern points at a specific content shape that both surfaces reward: a specific named destination, with seasonal weather context, written for an Indian female traveller. AI cites it because it answers "what should I pack for X". Google clicks it because users explicitly search for it.

Implications for fashion-content strategy

1. AI search and Google search reward different content types. Ceremony-outfit content is an AI gold mine because the underlying queries are intent-loaded ("what to wear to a Haldi ceremony") — but those same queries don't generate large Google click counts because users get their answer from the AI summary and don't need to visit the source. Conversely, destination travel guides generate Google traffic because users browse multiple sources before booking, but AI engines often prefer broader travel publishers as the grounding source.

2. Hybrid wins are rare and specific. The eight pages that perform on both surfaces share a narrow shape: India-specific destination, seasonal context, women's-fashion lens. If a brand wants to build content that wins both AI and Google, this is the template — not generic styling guides, not product roundups.

3. Product and collection pages are not where AI search lives. They earn a rounding-error share of citations. Brands hoping for direct product-page AI citations are pulling against the grain of how AI engines source. Editorial guides are the route in.

4. The two-channel split has different attribution implications. AI-cited content drives brand surface area (impressions in answers) without measurable on-site clicks. The value is real but invisible to most analytics. Brands relying on click attribution will systematically under-credit AI-search-friendly content; brands relying on AI-citation counts will under-credit destination guides that quietly drive Google traffic.

Methodology. AI citation data: Bing Webmaster Tools → AI Performance → Cited Pages export, snapshot 2026-05-26, cumulative across the prior 88 days. Google data: Search Console API, dimension=page, sum of clicks over the 30 days 2026-04-26 → 2026-05-26. Both datasets restricted to firstresort.in URLs only — no cross-site comparison. Category classification done by URL slug matching (destination = "what-to-wear-in-X", ceremony = wedding-related keywords, product-style = garment-name keywords, plus-size = size-related keywords). Pages with neither citations nor 30-day clicks are excluded. Trend-tail noise: BWT's daily timeseries under-reports the most recent ~14 days while Microsoft aggregates partner-engine data, so this analysis uses cumulative totals only.

FAQ

Why is this a same-site analysis instead of a cross-publisher comparison?

Bing's AI Performance dataset is only available to the verified site owner. Cross-site comparisons would require equivalent data from every publisher, which doesn't exist publicly. The trade-off is depth over breadth — every observation here is a clean within-site comparison with no apples-to-oranges issues.

Could the divergence just be a sample-size artifact?

The largest divergence cases are not small samples. The Haldi ceremony page has 426 AI citations and 1 Google click in 30 days; the Manali destination guide has 584 citations and 22 clicks. The pattern holds across enough pages (15 clearly AI-heavy, 4 clearly Google-heavy, 8 winning both) to be a real signal at this corpus size, not noise.

Does AI citation correlate with sales or just brand awareness?

That's a separate question and this dataset can't answer it. AI citations are an impression-side surface; attribution to revenue requires follow-on user behaviour data the AI engines don't share with publishers yet. What this analysis establishes is which content types occupy that impression surface in the first place.

Why does Google reward destination guides but AI rewards ceremony content?

It's likely about the underlying query distribution. Destination queries ("what to wear in Darjeeling") attract users who want to compare multiple sources before deciding — high-click behaviour. Ceremony queries ("what to wear to a Haldi") attract users who want a single confident answer — high AI-citation behaviour, low source-clicking. Both queries exist in real volume; the channels just route them differently.

How often will this be updated?

Annually, against a fresh BWT export and 30-day GSC window. The aim is a year-over-year picture of how the AI vs Google split is evolving as both surfaces mature.
