Cashmere Capes for Women: The Edit

A cashmere cape is decided by how it is made before what colour it is. Woven cashmere is smooth and holds a cleaner line from the shoulder. Knitted cashmere is softer and a little stretchy, and settles on the body without being arranged. All seven here have open sleeves and no closure, so they go on over whatever you are already wearing.

Woven, in one colour

The woven capes have the sharpest outline of the seven. The fabric holds its shape at the shoulder and swings at the hem, so the cape looks the same whether you stand still or walk.

Red is the boldest of them. It has a thin black edge that runs down the front and round the hem. Wear it over black, white or grey, not over another bright colour, and let it fall open.

The black cape reverses that: black cashmere with a red edge. It has enough weight to sit well outdoors, so it works over knitwear for a day out and over a fitted top for dinner.

Woven, in two tones

The ombre capes are woven in the same way, but the colour changes across the cloth. The second colour shows most along the open sleeves, so wear them loose from the shoulder rather than pulled close.

Grey deepens into sky blue in the cooler of the two. It sits naturally over white or denim.

Peach fades into pistachio in the warmer one, for daytime over cream or soft neutrals. It is a light alternative to a jacket when the weather is between seasons.

Knitted, short and long

The knitted capes are softer to the touch and have a wide border in a second colour. Length is the real choice here.

The short one, in cream with a grey border, ends at the hip. It works tonally over beige and camel, or as contrast over darker clothes.

The long knitted capes fall past the hip and can double as an evening throw. Blue with a grey border is the cooler choice, over denim or navy.

Sand with a brown border is the warmer one, over camel, cream or rust. Wear it open at the front so it does not read as a full coat.
