Silk Kaftans for Women: The Edit

Silk is two different fabrics in these seven kaftans. Silk crepe is opaque and glossy, falls heavily and belongs at dinner. Silk organza is sheer and light, and belongs at the beach. Choose the silk first, then the length.

Silk crepe, full length: for evenings

Crepe has a fine pebbled surface that catches light without looking slick, and at full length it falls straight from the shoulder to the ankle. These three are the occasion pieces: dinners, receptions, a festive evening at home.

The tiger print is the newest of the seven. It is rust and black on a glossy crepe, with a line of crystals at the V-neck. Gold bangles and a small clutch are enough with it.

The magenta honeycomb is draped at the front and gathered under a sequin butterfly at the waist, so it has more shape than a straight kaftan. Beading runs along the neckline and the sleeve hems; wear your hair up so it shows.

Grey and gold is the quietest of the three. The tribal print reads like a necklace across the yoke, and there are crystals at the round neck. Keep the jewellery to earrings.

Silk crepe, tunic length: evening without the floor-length

The same crepe cut to the knee, with an uneven hem and wide kaftan sleeves. Over slim black trousers they work for evenings; over bare legs with sandals, for a long lunch.

The grey and black python is the easiest to dress up because the print is muted, and the crystal V-neck does the rest.

The botanical tunic is the opposite: big pink, blue and orange flowers, with a bordered hem and a beaded V-neck. Wear it with plain neutrals.

Silk organza, mid length: for the beach

Organza is sheer, crisp and almost weightless. These two stop around the knee, have lace trim and a braided belt, and work as a cover-up over swimwear or over a slip dress for a beach-club lunch. They pack small and dry fast.

The aqua butterflies are on ivory organza with a tasselled hem. Belt it for shape, or leave it open over a swimsuit.
