What to Wear in Fiji: Villages, Resorts, Islands and the Seasons

What to wear in Fiji is mostly easy: it is warm all year, the resorts are relaxed, and a suitcase of light cotton, linen and swimwear covers almost everything. The one part that needs planning is the village visit, where Fijian custom asks visitors to cover up in ways a beach wardrobe does not. This 2026 guide covers Fiji's seasons and cyclone months, how to dress for a village visit and a kava ceremony, what to wear at the resorts and on the islands, and a packing list built around a long kaftan, a sarong and pieces that move from the pool to dinner.

Quick answer

Pack light cotton and linen: sundresses, a kaftan or caftan, shorts, two or three swimsuits, a sarong, a rash vest and flat sandals. For village visits, cover your shoulders and knees with a long skirt, dress or sarong, and take off your hat and sunglasses.

What is the weather like in Fiji?

Fiji is warm in every month, so its seasons are about rain and humidity rather than cold. The climate is tropical marine and warm year-round with minimal extremes. The warm season runs from November to April, and the cooler season from May to October, when temperatures average 22°C. The warm season is also the wetter one, especially inland, and on the larger islands the south-east sides get more rain than the north-west (Wikipedia: Fiji). In practice, the resort coasts around Nadi and the Coral Coast, and the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands to the west, are often drier than Suva in the south-east.

November to April is also cyclone season. The UK government's travel advice notes that tropical cyclone season normally runs from November to April, though cyclones can occur throughout the year, and that it brings a greater risk of strong winds, heavy rain, flooding and landslides (GOV.UK travel advice). If you travel then, add a light rain jacket, a dry bag and sandals that can get soaked, and keep your plans for island transfers flexible.

For packing, the season changes the layers rather than the wardrobe. From May to October, bring one cardigan, shirt or wrap for cooler evenings and boat rides. From November to April, choose the lightest, quickest-drying fabrics you own and expect to change outfits more than once a day.

What to wear in a Fijian village

A village visit is the highlight of many Fiji trips, and it is the one place with a real dress code. Tourism Fiji, the country's official tourism body, says it is respectful to cover your bare shoulders and legs when visiting a Fijian village; women often wear long skirts or dresses, and a sulu (a sarong) can be wrapped around the waist in the village and removed when you leave. It also asks visitors to remove hats and sunglasses as a sign of respect for the chief, and to carry bags in their hands rather than on their shoulders (Tourism Fiji). The UK government's advice is the same: cover your shoulders and knees in rural villages and during kava ceremonies (GOV.UK travel advice).

The simplest village outfit is a long, loose kaftan or caftan with sleeves, or a top that covers the shoulders with an ankle-length skirt. If you are coming straight from the beach, a sarong tied over shorts, with a shirt over your swimsuit, does the job. Leave your sun hat in the boat or the car and wear slip-on sandals, since you will often sit on mats inside.

Most visits begin with a sevusevu, the presentation of kava to the village chief. Tourism Fiji explains that it is customary to bring a small bundle or packet of powdered kava as a gift, and that most village tours do not run on Sundays, which are kept for church and rest (Tourism Fiji). If you are staying with a family over a weekend, keep your best long dress for the Sunday service.

“In Fiji, the sarong is the most useful thing in your bag. Tie it as a skirt for the village, a wrap for the boat and a shawl for dinner, and you have three outfits from one piece of cloth,” notes fashion designer Ramola Bachchan, whose label is cut from XS to 8XL.

Resorts, Denarau and the islands

Fiji's resorts, from Denarau near Nadi to the small island resorts of the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups, are relaxed and international, and swimwear is normal around the pool and on the beach. Two rules apply. Cover up when you walk into the restaurant, the lobby or a nearby village, and keep your top on: the UK government's travel advice notes that topless bathing and nudity in public are illegal in Fiji (GOV.UK travel advice).

The best resort wardrobe is built from pieces that go over swimwear. A short kaftan or a sheer cover-up takes you from the pool to lunch, a sundress in cotton handles the rest of the afternoon, and a co-ord set of loose shorts and a shirt is ideal for transfers and trips into town. Island-hopping by boat means wet feet and wind, so pick flat sandals that can get wet, and a hat that ties on.

Nadi, Suva and the towns

Most visitors pass through Nadi, and many spend a day in Suva, the capital, on the wetter south-east coast. Outside the resorts, Fiji dresses more modestly than its beaches suggest, and in our experience a knee-length dress or a tunic over loose trousers feels right for markets, shops and town. Fiji is home to Christian churches, Hindu temples and mosques, so if you plan to step inside any place of worship, carry a scarf that covers your shoulders, wear shoes you can slip off, and follow any guidance posted at the door. In Suva, add a compact umbrella to your bag in any month.

Snorkelling, boat days and the sun

Fiji is famous for its reefs, and most visitors spend at least one day snorkelling, diving or on a boat. In our experience this is where a practical layer matters most: a long-sleeved rash vest or swim shirt protects your back and shoulders when you spend an hour face-down in the water, and a lightweight linen shirt over your swimsuit protects you on deck. A pair of loose shorts or beach trousers and a sarong are easier than a dress on a boat ladder.

Pack two or three swimsuits so one can dry while you wear another, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen, and choose light colours for long days outdoors. Keep the long, flowing pieces for the beach at sunset rather than the boat.

Evenings in Fiji

Dinner in Fiji is rarely formal. Resort restaurants ask for little more than a cover-up over swimwear, and the dress code at even the smartest places is resort-casual in our experience: a long printed caftan, a maxi dress or wide trousers with a silky top and flat metallic sandals. Many resorts hold a lovo (an earth-oven feast) or a meke (a traditional dance performance) during the week, and a bright floral print fits the mood. From May to October, bring a stole for breezy evenings on the beach.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear in a Fijian village?

Cover your shoulders and knees: a long skirt or dress, or a sulu (sarong) wrapped over shorts, with a top that has sleeves. Take off your hat and sunglasses in the village, and carry your bag in your hand rather than on your shoulder.

Can I wear a bikini in Fiji?

Yes, at resorts, on resort beaches and on boat trips. Cover up with a sarong, kaftan or dress when you leave the beach, and remember that topless bathing and nudity in public are illegal in Fiji.

What is the best time of year to visit Fiji?

The cooler, drier season from May to October, when temperatures average about 22 degrees C. November to April is the warm, wetter season and also tropical cyclone season.

Do I need warm clothes for Fiji?

Only a light layer. Fiji is warm all year, but a cardigan, shirt or wrap is useful for cooler evenings from May to October, for air-conditioned rooms and for boat rides.
