What to Wear in Hawaii: A Resort Packing Guide
What to wear in Hawaii is simpler than almost anywhere else: the islands are warm year round, the dress code is relaxed, and a bright print is practically formal wear. This 2026 guide covers the weather by season, what to wear for beach days, luau nights and mountain sunrises, and a packing list built around breathable kaftans and dresses.
Quick answer
Pack for warm, breezy days: light cotton, linen and viscose dresses, a couple of kaftans or cover-ups, a co-ord set for dinners, sandals, and one warm layer. The layer matters because Hawaii's mountain summits are far colder than its beaches.
What is the weather like in Hawaii?
Hawaii's tourism board describes two seasons: summer from May to October and winter from November to April. It gives average daytime temperatures at sea level of 85 F (29.4 C) in summer and 78 F (25.6 C) in winter, with nights about ten degrees cooler, and names November to March as the wettest months (Go Hawaii). Trade winds keep most days breezy.
In other words, you pack much the same wardrobe in any month: breathable cotton and linen, loose shapes, and one layer for evenings and rain showers.
Beach and pool days
Build the day around a swimsuit and something easy to pull on over it. A short cover-up or sarong takes you from the sand to a poke shack; a longer kaftan covers shoulders on a boat or a snorkel trip, when the sun on the water is strongest. Add a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and you are set.
Aloha attire, dinners and luau nights
Hawaii has its own dress code, and it is colour. Aloha attire, meaning a bold print shirt or dress, is accepted at most restaurants and at a luau. For women that translates to a printed maxi dress, a long kaftan or a co-ord set in a floral print, worn with flat sandals because luau grounds are often grass or sand. Higher-end resort restaurants may ask for no swimwear or flip-flops in the evening, so pack one pair of dressier sandals.
“Hawaii is the one place a big tropical print is never too much. Wear it head to toe and keep everything else simple” says Ramola Bachchan, the fashion designer behind First Resort.
Volcanoes and mountain sunrises
This is where most visitors get caught out. Temperature falls with altitude, and the tourism board notes that the summit of Haleakala, at 10,023 feet, can be as much as 30 F cooler than resort areas on the coast (Go Hawaii). For a sunrise trip, wear warm pants, closed shoes and a proper jacket over your holiday clothes; a jacket or heavy layer earns its place in the suitcase for this morning alone.
A 7-day Hawaii packing list
- Two swimsuits and a cover-up or sarong.
- Two kaftans: one short, one long for dinners.
- Two printed maxi or midi dresses for aloha-attire evenings.
- One co-ord set that also works as separates.
- Shorts and a loose shirt for hikes and town.
- One warm layer and closed shoes for mountain trips.
- Flat sandals, one dressier pair, a hat and a light scarf for the plane.
It is the same capsule logic as any beach trip; see our week-long capsule wardrobe for how to make ten pieces cover seven days.
Island by island
The islands share a climate but not a personality, and a few adjustments make packing easier.
Oʻahu. Home to Honolulu and Waikīkī, it is the most city-like island. Alongside beachwear, pack a couple of polished-casual outfits, such as a midi dress or a linen co-ord set, for restaurants, shopping and a night out in town.
Maui. Resort beaches, the road to Hāna and the Haleakalā sunrise. Pack the most range here: swimwear and kaftans for the coast, and your warmest layer for the summit.
Hawaiʻi Island (the Big Island). Volcano country, with dry lava coasts on one side and green, rainier slopes on the other. Bring a light rain layer, closed shoes for lava fields and trails, and something warm if you go up the mountains.
Kauaʻi. The greenest island, loved for hiking, cliffs and waterfalls. Quick-drying shorts, a loose shirt and a lightweight layer will serve you better than anything dressy.
Colour and fabric
Choose fibres that breathe and forgive creasing: cotton, linen and viscose. Hawaii rewards colour, from bold florals to bright solids, so this is the trip for the print you never wear at home. Keep one neutral piece, such as an all-white dress or kaftan, to reset the palette between louder outfits.
Honeymoon in Hawaii?
Hawaii is a classic honeymoon destination, and the only change is more dinners out. Add an extra evening dress and one special piece for the night that matters. Our honeymoon packing guide covers the rest.
